his is a cattery that genetic tests. Guess what? Helps but not 100%. HCM-heart Echo, PKD-kidney, PK deficiency-anemia, FELV/FIV - feline leukemia, ELYSA-corona. Yearly rabi shots and yearly boosters and yearly fecals. What does this mean? nothing is 100% guaranteed or so we found out in 2023! Repeat...
Genetic testing is necessary but not 100%. The cattery in 2024 had its first FIP terrible experience. The One kitten lived after the correct FIP meds now approved by the US Gov. Let me tell you this. I am going to save you some money. Talk to me about kitten health insurance for ACCIDENT & ILLNESS only! For a kitten its $11.00 a month. You do not need the WELLNESS PLAN. The WELLNESS PLAN is the yearly booster and rabi shot. WELLNESS has a $500 deductible. Just get the ILLNESS and ACCIDENT. Talk to Cindy.
Testing each cat only means that we tried to offer you a healthy kitten.
Unfortunately Siberian cats are one of the 21 breeds where you cannot find genetic DNA markers to determine if a cat is a carrier of hcm. Read below about siberian cats and a email from UC Davis regarding the hcm heart disease.
Cindy is not worried about HCM but I do know the risk of FIP. When China sent us Corona in humans it becomes COVID-19 in cats it can become FIP. FIP has many faces. AGAIN talk to Cindy i am somewhat expert since not much i have not seen!
Dear Cindy, (from UC Davis California)
Thank you for your email. Our laboratory tests for two genetic variants in the MYBPC3 gene that have been implicated as cause for HCM in Maine Coon cats (A31P variant) and Ragdolls (R820W variant). Basepaws describe on their website that they test for the same two variants and a third variant in the MYH7 gene. However, the third variant they test for has only been reported in a single domestic cat and, to the best of our knowledge, this has not been validated, which is why we do not offer a test for that third variant.
It is important to note, however, that some cats that have the HCM genetic variant never develop clinical disease and some cats that develop clinical HCM do not have any of the two well established genetic variants. What that means is that there are likely other yet unknown causes for HCM in cats.
Genetic testing offers a non-invasive way to obtain information about the genetic status of a cat. Cats with the HCM genetic variant are at increased risk for developing HCM.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Kind regards,
Liza
